Graduate students Kristie Allen and Devin Griffiths were the recipients of the first English Department Dickens Fellowships. Thanks to a generous gift from an alum, Ms. Allen and Mr. Griffiths were able to participate in the week-long "Dickens Universe," an annual gathering hosted by the University of California's Dickens Project. The event is a combination of an academic conference and a fan convention, with scholarly presentations, teaching workshops, dramatic readings, and a Victorian Dessert Party and Dance. "My experience was fantastic," says Ms. Allen. "It was a great opportunity to meet with some of the best Dickens scholars in the country as well as a chance to meet and talk with other graduate students." Mr. Griffiths says, "It has completely recharged my sense of the field and of my fellow Victorianists, my colleagues who are doing such wonderful work. I really can't rave enough about the experience and how it has changed my sense of myself as an academic." Sincere thanks to the Friend whose donation made the Dickens Fellowships a new opportunity for students in the Graduate Program.
