Alumni Offer Career Advice
By Brooke Dowd<

What do a career coach, an assistant superintendent of schools, a public relations executive, an endocrinologist, and the owner of a bed and breakfast in Maine all have in common? They’re all Rutgers English graduates who have agreed to serve as Career Advisors.

While brainstorming ways to increase alumni contact with students, Mary Szymonowicz, Jennifer Pennacchio, and Brooke Dowd knew from fellow interns’ research – and from their own concerns – that one issue would grab the most attention: careers. Rutgers Career Services offers a large database of alumni career advisors, dozens of whom are English majors. These short listings inspired the interns to create expanded versions, expressly for the English website. They knew that if students could read personal and detailed career profiles of former English majors, they would be able to think more creatively about potential jobs. They also hoped that posting feature profiles would encourage even more Rutgers English alumni to sign up as advisors.

Several alumni generously participated in interviews, all of them eager to answer the question, “What can you do with an English degree?” You can read our first batch of profiles on our website, and more are coming soon.

If you have advice to share and would like to participate this fall, please call Friends of Rutgers English at 732-932-7612, or email us at for.english@rutgers.edu. To sign up as a career advisor, visit the Rutgers Career Services website.
