Anglo-Saxon Reading Group

The Anglo-Saxon Reading Group meets bi-weekly to translate and discuss Anglo-Saxon poetry and prose. Because translators at all levels are welcome to participate, the intention of the group is to build skills in reading Old English and in rendering translations for various purposes, from the literal translations necessary for scholarly analysis up to poetic translation into Modern English. Discussions have a focus on issues of translation as well as analysis of the texts themselves as literary and historical works with a range of meanings and registers (epic, cultural, gendered, theological, and so on) that can either be opened up or shut down based on the translation.

Recent Readings:
Beowulf
Wulf and Eadwacer
The Wife's Lament
