Applications, Deadline and Inquiries

Students should apply on-line:

https://www.acs.rutgers.edu/gradadmission/newApplicant.app

The deadline for applying to the Graduate Program each year is December 15th.

Graduate School catalogues are available on-line:  http://catalogs.rutgers.edu.

In addition to the completed application, applicants are required to submit:

  1. two copies of all relevant (undergraduate and graduate) academic transcripts;
  2. three letters of recommendation from persons familiar with the applicant’s work;
  3. a personal statement, one to two pages in length;
  4. a writing sample, about 10-20 pages in length, demonstrating the applicant’s abilities as a literary critic;
  5. Graduate Record Examination scores, both General and Subject (Literature in English). These tests must be taken within three years of application to the Program;
  6. TOEFL/IELTS. An official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score is required of non-native speakers of English. The minimum TOEFL score is 213 (computer version) and 550 (paper version). The completion of a master's degree in the United States is not grounds for waiving test results. A Band 7 or higher score is required for the IELTS. The TOEFL or IELTS score may be no more than two years old, and
  7. a curriculum vitae, which should also include a list of the applicant’s fields of interest.

Use Institutional code #2790 to report GRE and TOEFL/IELTS scores. Arrange for all supporting documents and official test scores to be sent to the Office of Graduate and Professional Admissions, Rutgers, The State University of NJ, 18 Bishop Place, New Brunswick, NJ 08901-8530, U.S.A.

For test administrations of the GRE, TOEFL, and SUBJECT tests, contact the Educational Testing Service, 609/771-7670. For IELTS application information, call 626/355-065.
