In our own age of rapid media shift, there is an urgent need to revisit parallel moments in history when new human uses of technology seemed at once to offer new democratic opportunities and to threaten traditional cultural forms, institutions, and ways of life. This workshop will bring together established literary scholars to lead a discussion of Jonathan Swift’s satire on “corruptions in religion and learning," A Tale of a Tub (1704), a text often read as an indictment of the new “print culture.”
