Biography
Patrick R. O’Malley is an Associate Professor of English at Georgetown University. He received his A.B., A.M., and Ph.D. from Harvard University. His book, Catholicism, Sexual Deviance, and Victorian Gothic Culture was published by Cambridge University Press in 2006. His research focuses on the relationship between sexuality, religion, and culture, especially during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Professor O’Malley has presented papers and written articles on, among other authors, Oscar Wilde, Thomas Hardy, James Joyce, Sydney Owenson, and Radcliffe Hall. In his lecture, “The Epistemology of the Cloister: Sexing Victorian Catholicism,” he will argue that the construction of minoritized religious identities in Victorian England provided the template for the construction of minoritized sexual identities.
