"There was a baby born named Ida. Its mother held it with her hands to keep Ida from being born but when the time came Ida came. And as Ida came, with her came her twin, so there was Ida-Ida."
- Gertrude Stein, IDA |

Performer Wendy Salkind is known for her international performances of Beckett’s difficult short plays and her performances with the Maryland Stage Company in Pinter, Shakespeare, Congreve, and Genet among others. She previously directed Stein's Listen To Me at the University of Maryland Baltimore County Department of Theatre where she teaches acting, voice and Alexander technique.
Drawn from Stein's late novel, IDA tells the story of a girl who creates a twin so that she will no longer be "just one." The narrative is moving, witty, and filled with rich incongruities--especially when the narrator,as performed by Salkind, becomes mired in Ida's search for identity. The 40-minute performance features an original sound score, composed by Linda Dusman, an aural landscape that weaves in and out of the performance, heightening the rhythms and repetitions of Stein's language and strengthening the narrative imagery.
