Biography

Joyce Carol Oates has recently published her 36th novel, The Gravedigger’s Daughter, as well as a collection of short stories, The Museum of Dr. Moses: Tales of Mystery and Suspense. She has also published numerous novellas, short stories, poetry, screenplays, drama, libretti, essays and criticism– over 70 books in all.  Many of her works have been recreated as films.  She excels in psychological and social realism as well as Gothic tales, and her novels thus convey the struggle for survival against poverty, abuse, or violence as well as the struggle with darker forces, whether unconscious or supernatural.  She has also written under the pseudonyms “Rosamond Smith” and “Lauren Kelly.”  Her novel THEM received the National Book Award in 1970, and We Were the Mulvaneys was chosen by Oprah’s book club in 2001.  A member of the Board of Trustees for the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, she lives in Princeton and teaches in the Creative Writing Program at Princeton University.
