Fall 2012 Undergraduate English Courses: Medieval

350:321 Chaucer

01  TTH5  CAC  15649  ELLISON   SC-119

This course offers an introduction to Chaucer through his most famous poem, The Canterbury Tales. By reading a significant portion of the Tales in their original Middle English, we will survey popular medieval literary genres, including the lai, fabliau, and romance; investigate dream theory; think about mythic pasts; and consider the game that structures the work. We also will consider various relationships and hierarchies structuring medieval society, especially those cohering around gender, class, and religion. There will be two short papers, a midterm, a final, and a number of shorter written assignments.
