This lecture course provides a survey of Shakespeare's great plays and poems written during the reign of Queen Elizabeth. We will study a broad range of genres, including sonnets, comedies, histories, and tragedies. Some attention will be given to Shakespeare's context, the history of Shakespeare criticism and reception, film and stage interpretation, and to the range of allusion in his plays. Readings will include The Sonnets, Romeo and Juliet, Midsummer Nights Dream, Merchant of Venice, Henry IV, Henry V, Othello, Julius Caesar, As You Like It, and Hamlet.
Requirements: two exams. Two short essays and other short assignments.
