American Literature of the Long Twentieth Century

In this course, we will study a range of works of American fiction from the early twentieth century to the present.  We will analyze these works in relation to parallel developments in American culture as a whole, from the rise of the motion picture industry in the interwar period to the digital revolution of the early twenty-first century.  We will also examine how the American “canon” has been formed (and reformed) over the past hundred years.  Authors may include Henry James, Willa Cather, Jean Toomer, Ernest Hemingway, John Dos Passos, James Baldwin, Philip Roth, Leslie Marmon Silko, Don DeLillo, David Foster Wallace, Jhumpa Lahiri, and Jennifer Egan.
