01   MW6   CAC   16939    KING    MU-114

In “Introduction to the Novel” we will explore the characteristics of the novel form and ask why this genre has dominated our literary culture for
over two centuries.  Using both British and American texts, we will examine the ways in which the novel seeks to both critique and entertain.
The syllabus will include works by Jane Austen, Anne Brontë, Richard Yates, and Barbara Kingsolver,  among others, and the course requirements will include two papers, an in-class exam, in-class writings, and active participation in class discussions.
