This course will introduce students to crime fiction from an international perspective. We will trace variations of the genre as it develops over time and migrates across borders. In particular, we will examine various examples of "noir" fiction, especially in serial forms. After a set of initial readings of American (and American exile) classics, we will sample work from more recent writers, mostly from Europe, but also from Asia and Africa. Lectures will also address material (books and films) that are recommended but not assigned. Throughout the semester we will try to understand the usefulness and range of the crime genre as a form of social and political critique. There will be weekly reading quizzes and blog posts.
