This course introduces students to the basic tools used in the study of film. Its chief focus is on elements of film form, ranging from mise-en-scene (lighting, framing, camera movement, etc.) and editing (the continuity system, as well as other types of editing), to sound (that coming from the world of the fiction, or from an unseen source of "pit" music, etc.). Films to be screened include ones directed by Hitchcock, Welles, Renoir, Eisenstein, Lang, and others.
Requirements include a midterm, a final, and two relatively short papers.
