The Gothic Novel in 19th Century Britain

This course will introduce you to the fundamentals of literary studies by focusing on the gothic novel, a genre central to the history of the novel and to the way writers and readers thought about their world in the nineteenth century. To analyze the transformation and adaptability of narrative forms, we will read three or four short gothic novels from across the century. We will also consider the special relationship between gothic fiction and place, from the majestic Alps to seedy London to imperial Africa. Authors may include: Mary Shelley, Emily Brontë, Charlotte Brontë, Charles Dickens, Robert Luis Stevenson, Oscar Wilde, and Joseph Conrad.
