358:422 Seminar: Medieval Otherworlds
01 TTH6 CAC 17374 NOVACICH SC-116
This course surveys a range of texts organized around the idea of alternative worlds: dreamscapes, celestial and infernal realms, fairy kingdoms, and various combinations of these categories. A challenging reading list includes Chaucer’s House of Fame, the Middle English poem Pearl, Dante’s Inferno, a number of anonymous lays and romances, and scholarship concerning travel, geography, and the political uses of imagined otherworlds. Students will conduct independent research on a topic related to the reading and produce a series of short essays that culminate in a 12-15 page research paper.
