01 MW6 CAC 19474 FULTON HH-A5
Arguably the greatest single event in the history of English literature was the translation and printing of the Bible in English. Concentrating on the most valuable sections of the Bible to English literature, this course will also investigate the complex relationship between the Bible and some of the foremost writers of English, including Thomas Wyatt, John Milton, and Oscar Wilde. We will examine the nature of the translation of the biblical text into English, but also into works of English literature, and consider the significance of various modes of allusion and interpretation. Secondary readings include from major works such as Northrop Frye, The Great Code: The Bible and Literature.
