01- Medieval Romance
The genre of medieval romance can be difficult to define. This class surveys the great medieval works traditionally grouped under such a heading in the attempt to delineate a set of characteristics. We will investigate ideas about the state, gender difference, enchanted landscapes, genealogies, and prophecy. Texts will include works by Chaucer, Chr├ętien de Troyes, Marie de France, the Pearl Poet, and other anonymous writers. There will be two papers, two exams, and a number of shorter written assignments.
