01- Medieval Romance
The genre of medieval romance can be difficult to define. This class surveys the great medieval works traditionally grouped under such a heading in the attempt to delineate a set of characteristics. We will investigate ideas about the state, gender difference, enchanted landscapes, genealogies, and prophecy. Texts will include works by Chaucer, Chrétien de Troyes, Marie de France, the Pearl Poet, and other anonymous writers. There will be two papers, two exams, and a number of shorter written assignments.
