350:422 Seminar: Medieval Women
01 TF3 CAC 52622 NOVACICH SC-201
This class considers the various ways in which women were represented in medieval texts and visual culture. What were the spheres of women’s influence, and what were the methods for accessing different kinds of authority? How were women represented in relation to men? What were their designated roles and how were these transgressed? And to what extent can ‘woman’ be thought of as a stable category? Writers include Marie de France, Christine de Pizan, Chaucer, and Margery Kempe. A series of short written assignments will culminate in a final research paper.
