Spring 2013 Undergraduate English Courses
350:335 Victorian Poetry
01 TTH4 CAC 55758 LECOURT SC-207
This course surveys the work of several major Victorian poets, including Alfred Lord Tennyson, Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Matthew Arnold, Christina Rossetti, and Algernon Charles Swinburne. Although our readings will proceed chronologically, focusing on these poets’ individual careers as they developed their voices, we will also explore how they used certain key forms – including the dramatic monologue and the verse narrative – to address common concerns about the changing role of poetry
in Victorian literary culture.
