01-Contemporary American Poetry
American poetry is diverse in a great many ways: formally disparate, arising from many different cultural and ethnic positions,
and valuing very different aspects of poetics. In this course we will read American poetry from 1959 until the present moment and try to describe this large, contentious, lively art as it's being practiced in our time. Readings and discussions of major poets will be supplemented by poems chosen by students for class presentation. Writing requirements: two short response papers, class presentation, 3-5 pp final paper. Students are expected to attend readings by visiting poets on campus.
