| 350 |
These courses approach literature from the perspective of historical periods. Some courses may span centuries, and others may involve just a decade or two. The 350 rubric also includes single-author and genre courses, set within a historical framework. |
| 351 |
These courses address a broad array of topics, encompassing various genres, issues, themes, and traditions. The 351 rubric also includes creative writing and research-oriented courses. |
| 353 |
These courses deal with literary theory. Some courses emphasize the history of criticism and theory; others focus on major theoretical approaches or specific theoretical questions. |
| 354 |
These courses concern Film Studies. There are historical, theoretical, genre-based, and special topics courses in film, covering a range of cinematic traditions and methodologies. |

| 200 |
Introductory-level courses. 350:219/220 (Principles of Literary Study) offers a fundamental grounding in the study of poetry and prose. Other 200 level courses include surveys of British, American, and Black literature, as well as introductory courses in genres, theories, and film studies. |
| 300 |
Intermediate-level courses. These courses will involve both reading and writing (typically two or more 5-7 page papers). Both majors and non-majors may take 300-level courses. |
| 400 |
Advanced courses, mostly seminars. The 400-level seminars are restricted to majors, who must have completed 219 and 220 to enroll. Seminars should require research and approximately 20 pages of writing. Honors students should take seminars to prepare for writing the thesis. |
