Restoration and Early Eighteenth Century Literature and Culture

This course examines works of fiction, poetry, drama, song, and non-fiction prose written between 1660 and 1730.  We will read (and listen to) Restoration drama, comic opera, satirical and pornographic poetry, periodical essays, popular ballads, and early novels.  Authors may include Dryden, Rochester, Behn, Swift, Addison and Steele, Defoe, Gay, Haywood, and Pope.  Requirements include two papers, a formal presentation with bibliography, regular quizzes, and exemplary attendance.
