Twentieth-Century Drama I

01   TF3   CAC   29420    BUCKLEY      SC-115

This course will survey the radical origins and revolutionary development of modern drama in the early twentieth century.  We will read some of the most innovative and influential plays ever written, exploring the varied and violently changing social, political, and formal contexts of dramatic realism, symbolism, expressionism, futurism, dada, and constructivism, as well as a few plays that stand outside these primary avant-garde movements.

In addition to close examinations of plays by Henrik Ibsen, August Strindberg, and Bertolt Brecht, we may read works by Frank Wedekind (author of "Spring Awakening"), Maurice Maeterlinck, Oscar Wilde, Oskar Kokoschka, F.T. Marinetti and company, Gertrude Stein, Vladimir Mayakovsky, Federico Garcia Lorca, and Antonin Artaud.

Students are not expected to have done prior coursework in dramatic literature.  Non-majors are encouraged to apply.  Performance and creative works will be possible but not required.  The components of evaluation will be determined to some degree on an individual basis.
