Seminar: Milton

This seminar investigates the work of one of England’s most extraordinary writers, who wrote during one of the most tumultuous periods in British history, the English Civil War and the Interregnum.  In addition to Milton’s poetry, this course will spend some time exploring the revolutionary prose that Milton composed during this period.  From the outbreak of the Civil War to the restoration of the monarchy – known as the "Restoration" – Milton's poetic career was interrupted for nearly twenty years while he wrote for the cause of the republicans.  The masterpieces he wrote after the Restoration – Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained, and Samson Agonistes – reflect the problems faced by English society throughout this turbulent era.  This course will study the relationship between this literature and the complex historical circumstances that gave rise to it.

Requirements:

Small written assignments and tests, and one long seminar paper.  Attendance is required.
