This course examines the literary production of the Black Arts Movement (1965-1975). Our readings will move between poetry, essays, drama, and fiction, as we examine various approaches to aesthetic innovation and cultural nationalism amidst one of the more racially and politically charged periods in twentieth century United States history. We will pay attention to the geographic sites of this cultural movement including New York, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Chicago, East St. Louis, and Washington D.C., as well as the black internationalist, Pan-Africanist, and Third World liberation ideologies that inform the artistic production and political theorization of the period. We will also examine the relationship of the Black Arts Movement to other American literary movements/moments such as the Harlem Renaissance and the Beat period. Our readings will be drawn from the work of writers, critics, and anthologists such as (but not limited to) Larry Neal, John Williams, Jayne Cortez, Henry Dumas, Aisha Rahman, Ed Bullins, Carolyn Rodgers, Charles Fuller, Amiri Baraka, Ted Joans, Sun Ra, David Henderson, Nikki Giovanni, Addison Gayle, Sonia Sanchez, Hoyt Fuller, and Eugene Redmond.
