Introduction to the Novel

01  TF3   CAC   31257  GLISERMAN    MU-213

One thematic focus of the course will be on growing up: does the central figure integrate life experiences, and how, or do these experiences overwhelm the character?  The course will examine both the basic and deeper constituents of the novel—narration, plot, theme, structure, sentence style and word webs. These aspects of the novel will be examined in a variety of classic and contemporary novels. Readings will include a graphic novel and a non-fictional narrative as a way to see if we can contradistinguish the novel from other narrative forms. On the short list are being considered are: Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe, Tom Wolfe’s I am Charlotte Simmons, Oscar Hijuelos’s The Mambo Kings Sing Songs of Love,  Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse, Chester Himes’ Blind Man with a Pistol,  Carol Shield’s  Larry Party

There will be informal weekly writing, a formal paper, quizzes on each novel and a take home final exam.
