A critical examination of some representative authors from the spectacular range of literary talent published in the first part of the Twentieth Century. In Fall 2008: James Joyce, Dubliners; Sherwood Anderson, Winesburng, Ohio; Ernest Hemingway, In Our Time and The Sun Also Rises; William Faulkner, The Sound and the Fury; Evelyn Waugh, Decline and Fall and A Handful of Dust; Vladimir Nabokov, Invitation to a Beheading; P. G. Wodehouse, Joy in the Morning.
Attendance: Since the course is largely made up of discussion, no more than two fully documented and excused cuts for any reason will be allowed without the penalty of half a course grade for each additional cut.
Means of Evaluation: Two short (4-6 pp) critical essays--50%; one-page preparations for class discussion--25%; factual Quizzes and a factual final examination 25%.
