Introduction to Poetry

01   TTH7   CAC   13296   KEEFE   MU-208

In this course we will learn how to understand poetry from the inside out. We will begin by learning the technical components of the poem, its language and sound, its form, its imagery, its rhythm and meter, in order to help us see and hear poetry’s whole art, which we will find is much more than the sum of these parts. Creative and critical written exercises and in-depth class discussions will help us to develop a language for talking and thinking about poetry both in the classroom and on the page. We will supplement our primary reading of poems with poetic statements by the authors and their contemporaries in letters, journals, interviews and essays in order to think about poetry’s work within its culture and community. We will also look at the relationship of poetry to other art forms such as music, sculpture, painting, drama, and photography. The course will cover a wide range of poetry including poems by: Anne Bradstreet, John Keats, Robert Browning, Christina Rossetti, T.S. Eliot, W.B. Yeats, H.D., Marianne Moore, Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks, Sylvia Plath, William Carlos Williams, Adrienne Rich, Mark Doty, and Harryette Mullen.
