350:308 Later Romantic Literature

This course offers a detailed introduction to the literature and culture of the later romantic period (roughly 1812-1830). Among the poets, major figures include Percy Shelley, John Keats, and Lord Byron. For prose, we shall read two strange and compelling novels: Beckford’s Vathek and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. The course will end with Jane Austen's great novel Persuasion. Requirements: 2 papers, 2 exams, and active participation.
