350:347 Twentieth-Century Drama II

This course will survey the development of modern drama in the latter half of the twentieth century, beginning with the modernist avant-garde’s entrance into the atomic age and ending with postmodern drama of the century’s end.  Playwrights may include Bertolt Brecht, Arthur Miller, Eugene Ionesco, Samuel Beckett, Jean Genet, Adrienne Kennedy, Harold Pinter, Heiner Muller, Edward Albee, Sam Shepard, Caryl Churchill, Tony Kushner, and Susan Lori Parks.

Students are not expected to have done prior coursework in dramatic literature.  Non-majors are encouraged to apply.  Performance and creative works will be possible but not required.  The components of evaluation will be determined to some degree on an individual basis.
