351:242 Introduction to the Novel |
01 MW6 CAC 69746 KING FH-B2
In “Introduction to the Novel” we will explore the characteristics of the novel form and ask why this genre has dominated our literary culture for over two centuries. Using a set of mostly British texts that share a satiric approach to the cultural and political issues of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, we will examine the ways in which the novel seeks to both critique and entertain.
The syllabus will include works by Austen, Dickens, Forster, Woolf, Wilde, Amis, and Woodhouse, among others, and the course requirements will include two papers, an in-class exam, and active participation in class discussions
