Literary Modernism & Literary Modernity
This course is a U.S.-focused case study in modernism in the context of the broader transformation of print and literacy in the first half of the twentieth century. We supply the context by considering texts of classic modernism together with some of their many non-modernist others as joint products of an expanding, fragmenting, and polarizing literary field. Topics of discussion include: aestheticism and naturalism, cultural pluralism and the Harlem Renaissance, nativist and cosmopolitan writing, commercial fiction, proletarian fiction and pulp fiction. Primary readings may include fiction by Henry James, Gertrude Stein, William Faulkner, Djuna Barnes, Anita Loos, W.E.B. Du Bois, H.P. Lovecraft, C.L. Moore, Langston Hughes, and Dashiell Hammett; poetry by T.S. Eliot, William Carlos Williams, Wallace Stevens, Marianne Moore, and Claude McKay; and exercises in examining some of the era’s distinctive print media (experimental anthology, little magazine, pulp magazine). Secondary readings focus especially on those scholars who broaden our understanding of the cultural and literary history of the period.
Students will write two conference-length (8–10 pp.) papers.
