Probably the most admired American fiction writer of his generation, George Saunders is the recipient of MacArthur and Guggenhem Fellowships, and the author of four collections of stories, including CivilWarLand in Bad Decline, two novellas, a collection of essays, and a remarkable novel, Lincoln in the Bardo, published this year and longlisted for the Booker Prize. NPR called him “a dark comedian of ordinary speech,” but his absurd humor hurtles toward the depths of his character’s lives with tenderness and unsparing clarity. His wildly original novel, narrated mostly by spirits residing in a D.C. cemetery, is both a comic investigation of what makes us cleave to this life and a heartbreaking portrait of Abraham Lincoln grieving for his young son.
