Welcome to the Department of English at Rutgers University

Support

Every summer a group of Rutgers English faculty and graduate students travel to Santa Cruz, California, to be a part of the Dickens Universe, an annual conference dedicated to the work of Charles Dickens, sponsored by University of California and now in its twenty-seventh year. Each summer, the Dickens Universe focuses on one Dickens novel, bringing together more than 200 scholars, graduate and undergraduate students, high school teachers, and members of the general public for an intensive week of study. In 2006, the novel was Nicholas Nickleby, and this summer, it will be The Pickwick Papers, with our very own Meredith L. McGill as one of the featured speakers.

We are in the process of compiling a recent list of our Friends who have made or renewed their gifts to Rutgers English during the last academic year. Lists of our Friends—including corporations and foundations for their matching donations and grants—have been featured in the first two issues of Future Traditions Magazine. We appreciate your continued support!

The support of Rutgers University alumni and friends helps to keep Rutgers one the best public universities in the nation. As New Jersey’s premier state university, Rutgers derives its revenue from a mix of private and public sources. Like other public universities, Rutgers relies on government funding as a vital component of its annual budget. Along with tuition and fees, direct state appropriations and state-paid fringe benefits are the primary means of support for the university’s educational offerings. Although state support remains essential to fulfill the university’s core educational mission, direct state appropriations and fringe benefit payments currently constitute just 24 percent of Rutgers’ $1.9 billion annual budget.

Because the Department of English serves so many students and runs so many programs, we make good use of every last dollar. Your contributions can help us through this crucial time. We need and appreciate your financial support! Your gift to the Friends of Rutgers English Fund will help the department provide support for:

  • Student fellowships, awards, and scholarships
  • Academic programs
  • Research and travel funding for faculty and students
  • Teaching Assistantships and Research Assistantships
  • Writers at Rutgers Reading Series and other public lectures and readings

Matching gifts are a win-win situation for everybody. Corporations get to make donations to causes their employees support, you get to send more money to the programs of your choice, and recipients are very grateful for the extra funding.
