This lecture course provides a survey of Shakespeare’s great plays and poems written during the reign of Queen Elizabeth. We will study a broad range of genres, including sonnets, comedies, histories, and tragedies. Attention will be given to Shakespeare’s context, the history of Shakespeare criticism and reception, and especially to film and stage interpretation. Since plays are written to be performed works of art, rather than texts studied individually by readers, we will spend some time in lecture watching clips of movies and filmed performances. Readings will include The Sonnets, Romeo and Juliet, Midsummer Nights Dream, Henry IV, Henry V, Julius Caesar, As You Like It, Hamlet, Twelfth Night, and Othello.
Requirements: two tests and a final exam; two short essays.
Texts: Barnes & Noble at Rutgers University
