This introduction to Shakespearean drama will look across genres, at comedies (Much Ado About Nothing and Measure for Measure), tragedies (Hamlet and King Lear), a history (Richard II), and a romance (The Tempest). Using performance and other creative lenses, we will consider how the plays address a range of pressing social, political, and literary issues. Our mission will be two-fold: to understand not only how Shakespearean drama speaks to and of the distinctive historical and cultural moment of 16th and early 17th century England but also how it speaks to us today, in 21st century America. Class attendance and participation will be vital. In addition to a number of weekly assignments, requirements will include a midterm and a final examination.
