358:254 Introduction to Science Fiction

Open only to SAS Honors program/ or Honors College students

Science Fiction is a vast genre with a long history, and like the universe itself, it is always expanding. In order to explore just one small corner of this field, this course will concentrate on more recent novels, mostly North American, primarily gravitating around utopian and dystopian aspects of contemporary culture. We’ll read Philip K. Dick, Ursula K. LeGuin, Octavia Butler, Samuel R. Delany, William Gibson, Margaret Atwood, Kim Stanley Robinson, and a few more. There will be a lot of reading, discussion, and writing.
