By far the most exciting way to study drama is through performance. Using filmed and live performances, this course will study closely a handful of Shakespearean and other plays, learn how drama is interpreted on the stage, and see a series of innovative performances, including Othello: The Remix, a Hip Hop version of Othello on stage in New York City
Other local plays include A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Merry Wives of Windsor.
Classroom work will be devoted to exploring how popular English drama emerged from the first public professional theaters in London on stages like Shakespeare’s Globe, how the plays we are seeing on stage have historically been performed, and how we, as interpreters of drama, would like to see them performed. We will watch many clips of Shakespeare on DVDs, and student research will include studying films and performance histories. Theater visits will usually occur on Wednesday nights.
Requirements: a few reviews of performances, 2 papers, and occasional quizzes.
