358:356 Early Twentieth Century Theater and Drama

01   Hybrid  Online   T 5:00-6:20   14762  DIAMOND    / Asynchronous online

This class explores the stunning experimentation in theatrical art between from the turn of the 20th century to the 1940s in the U.S. and Europe. We will begin with the turn to realism on the international stage. Playwrights may include Ibsen, Strindberg, Chekhov, Herne, Robins. We’ll discuss the rude experiments of the avant-gardes before and after WWI: Marinetti, Kokoshka, Brecht, including American experimental work (Hurston, O’Neill, Odets). We’ll think about the effect of cinema on theatre and about gender and racial agitation, the rise of fascism and the onset of WWII. If the pandemic permits, we will certainly try to go to the theatre in NJ or NYC.
