This course offers an immersive exploration of cinema both as an art form and a cultural/material production by analyzing pivotal moments in transnational and national filmmaking. By focusing on close analysis, we will examine the fundamental components of film, dedicating time to each element to build a comprehensive understanding of cinematic language. For instance, we will delve into the expressive potential of the close-up with Claire Denis, unravel the complexities of montage with Jean-Luc Godard, and analyze the poetic use of cinematography in the works of Robert Bresson. Additionally, we will study the evocative power of mise-en-scène through the visually colorful films of Pedro Almodóvar and the use of sound and off-screen space of Michael Haneke.

As we analyze these films with a focus on their technical and formal elements, you will develop a nuanced appreciation of how aesthetic and stylistic choices shape narrative meaning and affective responses. This technical inquiry will be hand in hand with critical engagement with key film theories. They will provide us with frameworks to interrogate issues of representation, spectatorship, and the politics of image-making. By the end of the course, you will cultivate both the analytical tools and the theoretical grounding to critically evaluate cinema’s formal artistry and its broader cultural implication
