This course examines literature about migration, immigration, and diaspora from the early twentieth century to the present, alongside theoretical and historical works that contextualize these phenomena. It explores how literature produced through cross-border movement—whether voluntary or forced, directly experienced or inherited through memory—gives rise to new formations of community, language, and belonging. Drawing on key concepts from postcolonial and diaspora studies, we will analyze how literary form mediates the losses and possibilities of displacement.

While the course engages works from multiple contexts, we will place particular emphasis on the circulation of peoples, cultures, ideas, labor, and capital between Asia and North America/Europe. Writers may include Carlos Bulosan, Julie Otsuka, Ocean Vuong, Monique Truong, Yoko Tawada, Hanif Kureishi, among others.
