This course provides a survey of Shakespeare’s plays and poems written during the reign of Queen Elizabeth. We study a broad range of genres, including sonnets, comedies, histories, and tragedies. Attention is given to Shakespeare’s context, sources, and especially to film and stage interpretation. Since the plays are written to be performed, we will frequently study clips of filmed performances. Readings include The Sonnets, Romeo and Juliet, Midsummer Night’s Dream, Much Ado about Nothing, Henry IV, part 1, Julius Caesar, Twelfth Night, and Hamlet.

Requirements: two tests and a final exam; two essays.
Texts: Available at Barnes and Noble at Rutgers, 100 Somerset St.
