In this 18th-century Women Writers course we will be exploring the works of both British and American writers by positioning them within the context of the changing narrative techniques that accompanied the rise of the novel during this time period and by focusing on the important social issues of gender and class that influenced the lives and the works of these remarkable women. Our reading list will include works by Charlotte Lennox, Frances Burney, Susanna Haswell Rowson, and Phillis Wheatley, among others. The course will require active engagement in class discussion, weekly reading responses, two papers, and an exam.
