In this course, we will survey a range of works of American fiction from the late nineteenth century to the present. In addition to reading novels and short stories, we will examine manifestos and critical texts from major literary movements in the United States. Authors studied may include Stephen Crane, Charles Chesnutt, Edith Wharton, Ernest Hemingway, Zora Neale Hurston, William Faulkner, Ray Bradbury, James Baldwin, Octavia Butler, Thomas Pynchon, Maxine Hong Kingston, David Foster Wallace, Jennifer Egan, Helen Viramontes, and Ted Chiang
