NinaSunEidsheimPoster Oct5 FinalThis talk will consider artist, composer, and musician Camille Norment's solo shows at Dia Chelsea (2022) and Bergen Kunsthall (2023). These shows, Plexus and Gyre, worked with physical forces, technology, space, audience presence and what Norment refers to as cultural psychoacoustics - the investigation of sociocultural phenomena through sound and music - to create immersive, multisensory works of art. Focused attention to these works shows the inadequacy of art - historical, music-theoretical, and musicological analytical frameworks. This talk takes Norment's work as a cue to develop new analytical methodologies and potential readings of sound and music.

Nina Sun Eidsheim is a Professor of Musicology and Humanities, Founder and Director of UCLA PEER  Lab, Musicology. She is the author of Sensing Sound: Singing and Listening as Vibrational Practice and The Race of Sound: Listening, Timbre, and Vocality in African American Music, and co-editor of The Oxford Handbook of Voice Studies.

Co-sponsored by the Center for Cultural Analysis, Department of English, Mason Gross School of the Arts, and the Comparative Literature Program
