Ghassan Zaqtan is perhaps the most important Palestinian poet writing today. Born in Beit Jala in 1954, he lived in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Tunisia before resettling in Ramallah. He has written ten poetry collections, two novels, two plays and an adaptation of Richard the Third, all to great acclaim. His works have been translated into French, Italian, Norwegian, Bosnian, Turkish, among other languages. His first translation into English, Like a Straw Bird It Follows Me, won the Griffin International Prize for Poetry. He is also the recipient of Palestine's medal for arts and culture, and is on the shortlist for the Neustadt International Prize.
