Juan Gabriel Vásquez was born in Bogotá, Colombia, in 1973. He studied Latin American literature at the Sorbonne between 1996 and 1998. His books include The Informers, which was shortlisted for the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize, The Secret History of Costaguana, winner of the Qwerty Prize in Barcelona, and The Sound of Things Falling, winner of the Alfaguara prize in Spain, the English PEN Award in the UK, the Gregor von Rezzori prize in Italy, and the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. His work is being published in twenty-one languages worldwide. He is the recipient of the Prix Roger Caillois, previously awarded to writers such as Mario Vargas Llosa, Carlos Fuentes, and Roberto Bolaño, amongst others. His new novel, Las reputaciones, was published in Spanish in 2013.
