Evie Shockley is  the author of three strong books of poems: a half-red sea (2006), The New Black (2011), and a new collection from Wesleyan, semiautomatic, a suite of poems investigating the hope that art, which cannot shield us from the violent dangers of this century, might feed the spirit and reawaken the imagination. Moving and politically alert, her poems are also lessons in ways poetic form can question received meanings, suggest new ones, and remind us of poetry’s mysterious power to turn form into content, content into form.
