Natalie Diaz was born in the Fort Mojave Indian Village in Needles, California; she is Mojave and an enrolled member of the Gila River Indian Community. She left the reservation to study and play basketball at Old Dominion University, later played professional basketball, then returned to Old Dominion for her MFA in poetry. Her first book, When My Brother Was an Aztec, is a gripping portrait of a sister struggling with a brother’s addiction within the dynamic of a family steeped in the mythology and cultural history of reservation life. Her poems move from stark narration to a language of sensuous interiority; her compelling new poems explore eros and identity in language both private and public at once.
